Quality is key to women’s legislative position

The quality of candidates should be the key factor in the quest for a greater number of women in central and regional legislative institutions to ensure they are effective in their struggle for women’s rights and to avoid voter apathy, observers have affirmed. Executive Director of the Institute for Social Studies and Empowerment (LP2M) of West Sumatra, Ramadhaniati, said the 30 percent quota of female candidates for each political party should be comprised of a selection of women of good quality. This may apply to the next elections because the present recruitment of candidates still tends to meet the quota for women, just like opening job vacancies as the deadline for nomination is approaching, which is quite funny,” she told The Jakarta Post in a recent interview.
